Trash & Recycling

Effective 1 January 2005, American Disposal Services is responsible for trash and recycling pick-up in Westhaven. Trash pick-up days are Mondays and Thursdays. Recycling is picked up once a week, on Thursdays.

Place your items at the curb after 7:00 p.m. the night before, or no later than 6:00 am the day of pick-up. If you place your garbage out too late (after 7:00 am) and it is not picked up, you must take it back in until the next pick-up. All trash and recycle bins should be stored in your garage or backyard on non-pick-up days. Please do not block the mailboxes with trash and/or recycling containers.

Trash and garbage must be in either a sealed trash can or a dark (not clear or white) plastic bag. Cardboard boxes may be set at the curb. You must arrange separately, in advance, with American Disposal Services for disposal of large items. Call their customer service at (703) 368-0500 at least 24 hours in advance when putting out bulk items.

Use the black American Disposal Services bin for recycling. Acceptable items include: newspapers (bundled, in paper bags, or in a separate recycling container); glass food and beverage containers; aluminum and steel cans; #1 and #2 plastic bottles and jugs.

Plastic containers used for insecticides, herbicides, petroleum products, or automotive fluids are not acceptable. No plastic bags please.

American Disposal Services does not operate on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, or when weather conditions make pick up hazardous. Your trash and/or recycling will be picked up on the next scheduled collection day.
